Why are there two copies of the same song?

This page has 2 transcriptions of the song Go by Blink-182! One is based on the album version of the song, and another is based on the performance filmed at Sessions @ AOL. When learning a cover, it’s often valuable to compare different performances of a song. Go is a relatively short and structurally simple song, with a few recorded performances readily available, so I transcribed two versions to make my own comparisons.

Comparing performances has many advantages - you can find essential components that make the song sound the way it does, clarify unclear elements of a song, or see how the musician has evolved their performance over time. As an example, Travis plays sixteenth notes on the ride cymbal during the bridge of this song while maintaining a standard quarter note kick-snare beat. When the band plays the bridge in this video (around 1:02), you can see that Travis plays these sixteenth notes as paradiddles, allowing him to lead the rhythm with his right hand but still hit the snare with his left. Discoveries like these will refine your performance, and may even serve as inspiration for your own original drum parts!

Unfortunately, recordings of live performances are not always available, or may be of such low quality that their value to you as a musician is limited. Still, it’s worth doing research on your favorite songs to play. You never know what you might find!
